What if I reduced my home heating?

What heating-cost difference is implied if you cut a percentage of a bill you already know?

Space heating is the large, seasonal part of many UK energy bills, but the saving from using less heat is not a universal percentage. Insulation, boiler or heat-pump efficiency, how you use the thermostat, and the weather in your region all move the result. Energy Saving Trust advice is about controls and comfort temperatures; Ofgem publishes typical consumption and unit rates that change every quarter. Your bill, your percentage

Ofgem’s typical domestic consumption values describe an average home, not yours. A 10% reduction on a £90 heating month is simply £9 that month on the arithmetic you typed. Whether a one-degree thermostat change, shorter heating hours, or a new programmer would actually deliver 10% is a property-specific question the sliders will not answer.

Months, not a year of heat

Many UK homes heat for something like October to March. Using six months as a default stops the model pretending that July needs the same boiler hours as January. If you live somewhere colder, or heat water and rooms on the same estimate, stretch the season. Standing charges are usually paid all year and should not be inside the monthly heating box unless you want them in the cut.

Comfort and fabric sit outside

Energy Saving Trust describes programmers, thermostats and radiator valves as ways to heat only when needed. Draughts, loft depth and uninsulated walls change how much energy a given temperature setting uses. This experiment will not invent a fabric upgrade. It will show what happens if the percentage you believe is realistic is applied for several winters.

Heating season cost each year = monthly heating × months heated. Estimated annual difference = season cost × (reduction ÷ 100). Period total = annual difference × years. The reduction is an assumption you supply, not an Energy Saving Trust or Ofgem forecast for your home. Standing charges, unit-rate changes and weather variation are omitted.
