What if I stopped using my car?

How much of a typical year’s motoring cost might not be spent if the car was not used?

Owning a car in the UK is a bundle of bills that do not all behave the same way if you stop driving. Fuel falls with the miles. Parking and some maintenance follow use. Insurance and vehicle tax often stay if the car stays on the drive — SORN and cancellation are separate decisions. This experiment lets you enter the annual amounts you actually pay, then compares the estimated difference between using the car as you do now and not using it for a year. A toggle keeps insurance in the still-own-it column so the result does not pretend a parked car is free. Depreciation, finance payments and replacement travel are not modelled unless you put them in “other”.

RAC Foundation series on motoring prices split fuel, tax, insurance and maintenance because they inflate at different rates. For a year without driving, fuel is the cleanest saving. Parking charges tied to commuting or town centres often go too. Servicing, tyres and consumables drop with mileage but do not vanish if the car still needs an MOT.

The insurance toggle is the honest part

If you still own the car, insurers generally still want a premium, and Vehicle Excise Duty still applies unless the vehicle is declared off road. The default keeps insurance in the residual column. Switch the toggle off only if you are modelling selling, gifting or otherwise disposing of the car — a different decision from “I will take the train this year”.

Replacement travel sits in other

Not using a car is not the same as not travelling. Season tickets, taxis, car clubs and a partner’s extra mileage can eat a large share of the headline saving. Put a realistic annual figure in “other” if you know it; leave it small if the journeys would simply not happen. The model will not invent a substitute timetable for you.

Annual cost of using the car = fuel + parking + maintenance + other, plus insurance unless “still own the car” is on. Estimated difference = that using-cost bundle. Vehicle tax, depreciation, finance and replacement travel are included only if you put them in the boxes. Figures are annual cash amounts you supply, not a national average cost of motoring.
