What If Humans Didn't Need Sleep?
How much waking life would you gain if sleep were optional?
Sleep is a third of a life if you give it eight hours a night and a full span of years. That is a lot of hours to daydream about reclaiming. This experiment treats those hours as a pile of recovered clock time and nothing else. It will not say you would be healthier, happier, more productive, or immortal. Biology uses sleep for memory, metabolism and a long list of processes this page does not model. What it will do is convert your age, your typical night, and a target age into years of waking life gained — and put that next to the milder fantasy of gaining a single extra hour every day, which is a different experiment on this site.

What does that mean?
If sleep had never been required, a 35-year-old who currently sleeps 8 hours a night would already have 11.7 extra waking years on the clock (11.7 years). Projected to age 80, that is 26.7 waking years gained in total — 33% of calendar time. Gaining a single extra hour each day over the same span is only 3.3 years. None of this is a health benefit. Known humans who do not sleep get ill. The hypothetical is the arithmetic of a need going to zero.

The arithmetic is honest, the biology is not for sale
Hours recovered to date are age × 365.25 × hours per night. Divide by 24 and you have years of waking life already 'spent' on sleep. Project the same rate to a target age and you have a lifetime pile. Those are calendar conversions. They are not a clinical trial. Removing sleep from a mammal, in the real world, is not a superpower; it is a medical emergency. The hypothetical is 'need' going to zero, which known physiology does not offer.
An extra hour is a smaller cousin
Gaining one hour every day for a working life is a popular thought on this site. No-sleep is that idea taken to whatever your night currently is — six, eight, nine hours. The comparison is here so the numbers stay in scale. Eight hours recovered daily for 80 years is not a sprinkling of productivity. It is a second adulthood of waking time. Whether a mind would want that, or could use it, is outside the model.
Culture would have a lot of night left
A species that does not sleep still lives on a rotating planet. Night would be a lighting problem and a social one, not a biological off-switch. This page will not redesign cities. It will note that the recovered hours include 03:00 as well as 19:00, and that 'more waking life' is not the same sentence as 'more of the life you liked.' The slider for target age exists so you can refuse to assume 80.
How we calculated this
Sleep hours to date = age × 365.25 × hours per night. Remaining = max(targetAge − age, 0) × 365.25 × hours per night. Years of waking life gained = total recovered hours / 24. The extra-hour comparison is 1 hour × 365.25 × years, matching the sibling life experiment in spirit. No health model, no productivity model, no claim that eliminating sleep is possible.
